Nation’s number 1 booming college town is in CT, according to one site. It’s not New Haven

2+ week, 17+ hour ago (154+ words) Step aside, New Haven. MoveBuddha "looked at the in-to-out move ratios and unemployment rates of hundreds of America's college towns, whittling the list down to 34 standout cities where, in 2025, more people are moving in than out, and fewer residents over 16 are unemployed than the national average." Which town or city topped the list? Connecticut's own West Hartford, according to MoveBuddha: "Home to the Universities of Hartford, St. Joseph, and Connecticut's Hartford campus, there are plenty of opportunities to expand your mind in a city with 2.92 moves inbound for every one out, and an unemployment rate around 12% lower than the national average." What is even more striking is West Hartford did not make their list last year, according to MoveBuddha. Well-known handcrafted CT food now star of a retail first. It grew from a "community connection.' Check out these other key…...

Readers speak: Why businesses and employees make passing on Connecticut a no-brainer

2+ week, 5+ day ago (229+ words) While states like Texas, Florida, South Carolina,Tennessee and others have businesses flocking to them, Connecticut has very few ... For the past decade the taxpayers of our state have been among the most overtaxed in the country. And according to the Tax Foundation's recently released State Tax Competitive Index, Connecticut finds itself once again at the bottom of the pile, 47th among all the states, just behind California, New Jersey and New York. There is little chance that our competitiveness will improve anytime soon. If Democrats have their way, Connecticut taxes will likely be competing for 50th position. Their indifference to the effect excess taxation has on business development and employment expansion is mind boggling. They seem to be oblivious to the individual taxpayers and businesses that have left the state for friendlier environments. And what is never known are the employers…...

Readers speak: The real reasons Connecticut voters elect Democrats

4+ day, 20+ hour ago (129+ words) Robert Scandura has it backwards." Connecticut voters elect Democrats because they do what the voters want them to do. Things like feed the hungry, address housing, protect immigrants, financing higher education, local schools, and business startups, among many other positive things." Connecticut Democrats don't censor school boards or libraries, don't speak in racist code words, and promote inclusion of all Connecticut citizens. I got off the couch many years ago to become an activist (phone banking and door knocking) to elect Democrats. Anyone who doesn't like Democrats can go and help elect Republicans." Or can move to one of their favorite "strawman" red states, Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma, etc., where Connecticut's federal income tax dollars subsidize that state. Patrick A. Farley, West Hartford...

Readers speak: Hey Connecticut. We are the leaders, and we need to feed people.

2+ week, 4+ day ago (216+ words) I have heard many people in the last few days state that "the" Democrats have failed them. "The Democratic leaders" are not doing "their" job. That "Washington" needs to have back up plans to feed people. To those people I say, you are using the wrong pronouns. We are the Democrats. We are the leaders, and we need to feed people. Don't just send money, feed people. I feed Dan and Christine. Dan has one leg and sits in a wheelchair in the cold and the rain and the burning sun. With simply a sign "homeless, please help." He and Christine live in the woods. They have no smartphones, no address, no EBT. And yet there are signs, and I'm looking at you "who care" in Enfield, saying not to give them money. To let them starve. I feed them....

Readers speak: Connecticut loves UConn basketball. We shouldn’t have to pay more to watch it.

3+ week, 6+ day ago (124+ words) If we want to watch some of the UConn basketball games on TV this year we will now have to buy into another provider at extra costs above and beyond what we already pay." We already support the UConn Athletic Department through the state taxes we pay and the out-of-control ticket prices. It doesn't seem fair that in order to watch Hoops on our TV we are now required to add another streaming service. Geno Auriemma has deepest roster in years and that means nightmare matchups for opponents It just doesn't seem reasonable to expect this from the Nutmeggers who have been loyal and steady supporters of UConn and its sports programs for decades. Here’s where Democrats won big in Connecticut. ‘This obviously is a key contest.’

3+ week, 4+ day ago (1385+ words) Democrats made broad gains Tuesday in Connecticut's first general election since Donald Trump's return to the White House, flipping open top-of-ballot seats that had been controlled by Republicans in the Democratic cities of New Britain and Norwich and suburbs of Branford and Westport. Unofficial results'also showed Republican incumbents falling to Democrats in upsets in Ansonia, Bristol, Stratford and Milford, while the outcomes of other races were unresolved as votes cast in sealed envelopes during early voting were opened and counted. In New Britain, a convincing win by Democratic state Rep. Bobby Sanchez underscored that the magic sauce of Mayor Erin Stewart, a Republican who thrived for 12 years in a city where Democrats outnumber Republicans nearly 3-1, was not transferrable to her chosen successor, Sharon Beloin-Saveedra. CT voters tackle hot-button local races and issues, some with an eye on national political divide…...

Democrats retake control of Bristol with former mayor reclaiming seat

3+ week, 4+ day ago (511+ words) After four years of Republican control in Bristol, Democrat Ellen Zoppo-Sassu defeated Mayor Jeff Caggiano in a close and heated election. When the first vote tallies came in shortly after polls closed at 8 p.m., Caggiano was up over 600 votes, but that lead was cut short by early voting totals. As news spread that early voting was favorable to Democrats, excitement began to spread at the city's Democratic headquarters on North Street. Caggiano, who has served as mayor since 2021, said that he is proud of his record in Bristol despite his loss. His defeat comes amid a wave of Democratic victories across the state and country Tuesday night. Caggiano said that he felt the election got swept up in the same way other elections doomed Republican candidates. Pre-K school debate becomes part of harsh election rhetoric in CT city. The roof collapsed…...

Readers speak: In Connecticut and quite skeptical about Mamdani

Housing law is mainly controlled in Albany. And union and contract ... Zohran Mamdani talks loud but I do not think he can actually build anything real or deliver results that survive contact with financial reality. Big promises sound exciting. But reality is made of budgets. Permits. And state law. New York City does not control the MTA. Housing law is mainly controlled in Albany. And union and contract obligations are not flexible. They are expensive measured processes. This is why I am skeptical. It is easy to say free buses or new public housing. It is much harder to legally execute that. A mayor needs state lawmakers council members unions and credible funding streams. If Mamdani wants to…...

More than 10,000 emails sent to New Haven students in ‘sophisticated phishing attack’

1+ week, 3+ day ago (259+ words) More than 10,000 emails were sent to students with the New Haven Public Schools system in what officials" are calling a "sophisticated phishing attack" that targeted the district. The attack came after accounts belonging to at least four students were compromised, laying the groundwork for hackers to send mass emails to more than half of the student body, school officials said in a notice to students and families on Wednesday. According to school officials, "well over" 10,000 emails were sent to students. Almost all of them went to multiple recipients at once and were designed to phish for bank information. School officials believe more than 1,000 students " making up about 10% of the student body " opened and read the emails. "While it is impossible to currently track exactly how many students submitted data, we have received reports indicating that some students did fill out…...
